Perkembangan kognitif terdiri dari bahasa dan visual-motor. Bahasa merupakan salah satu indikator
perkembangan keseluruhan dari kemampuan kognitif anak. Keterlambatan perkembangan awal kemampuan
bahasa dapat mempengaruhi berbagai fungsi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Selain mempengaruhi kehidupan
personal sosial, juga akan menimbulkan kesulitan belajar, bahkan hambatan saat terjun dalam dunia pekerjaan
kelak. Identifikasi dan intervensi secara dini dapat mencegah terjadinya gangguan fungsi kognitif dan
bahasa. Capute scales merupakan alat skrining yang dapat menilai secara akurat aspek-aspek perkembangan
utama termasuk komponen bahasa dan visual-motor. Keberhasilannya dalam pengukuran secara cepat dan
mudah dari aspek-aspek perkembangan akan membantu menegakkan diagnosis banding dari sebagian besar
kategori utama gangguan perkembangan (delayed, deviasi, dan disosiasi) pada masa bayi dan kanak-kanak
dini, sehingga dapat segera dilakukan intervensi dini untuk memberikan hasil yang terbaik.
